Training Expertise, Driver Training – Winter Driving Preparations

I was driving in to work this morning when I hit a pothole and got a flat tyre. It was so frustrating; the tyre was still in good condition and still had plenty of miles left in it. On the build up to Christmas having to fork out for a new tyre, alignment and balancing etc, etc, etc is definitely an expense that I could cope without.

Do you have everything you need

Make sure you are ready for the bad weather.

So amid the grumbles I changed the tyre feeling grateful that this time it was on the way into work and not at night, in the snow with my 2 year old daughter “patiently” waiting in her car. I felt almost efficient and well-practised, rather than Daddy trying to change the wheel fumbling through the ordeal by the light of the screen of his iPhone; most definitely not an ideal situation.

It really made me think, how prepared for winter am I? When was the last time I checked my tyre pressure, my screen wash and my wiper blades? Do I have jump-leads a jumper or blanket in the car? Where did I put that torch?

When I got into work a friend confessed that he didn’t know how to change a tyre… Do you?

How prepared are you?

Outdoor First Aid for Vehicle Emergencies

For the last ten years Training Expertise has specialised in outdoor first aid training.  In the last three or four years we have also developed a range of driver training including off-road drivingdefensive driving and MIDAS courses.  Throughout we were told by many clients that they struggled to find first aid training really tailored to their needs.

Therefore we are delighted, in association with BORDA, to launch our new vehicle first aid course.

outdoor first aid for vehicle incidents

First aid training focused on vehicle safety

This unique one day practical course covers outdoor first aid for vehicle emergencies. It focuses on first aid skills related to off-road driving & remote areas. It covers the core life-saving skills to deal with an incident through plenty of hands-on practice including vehicle based and outdoor scenarios.

It is built around practical vehicle related scenarios eg burns, falls from vehicle and collapse at the wheel.

Outdoor first aid for vehicle emergencies is for anyone who uses off-road vehicles or drives off-road professionally or in their leisure time. Skills learnt on this course will enable you to provide help in a first aid situation be it at an off-roading event, whilst driving yourself, at work or the first aid incidents you could come across on the road or in your day to day life.

It is certified by REC and run in association with BORDA so meets the needs of off-roaders, or anyone working in and around vehicles needing an emergency first aid qualification for work or simply for their own peace of mind.

Vehicle safety on expeditions overseas

New Training Expertise Business Manager Matt Ilott has just returned from leading an amazing school expedition to Cambodia with our partners at Wilderness Expertise.  He’s been reflecting on one of the biggest challenges we face when working overseas – vehicle safety.

One of the hardest elements of expedition travel safety – when it can be hardest to control the team and their safety is undoubtedly when using vehicles. Splitting the team to fit into the forms of transport available, be it Tuk-Tuks, taxis or minivans can be a real challenge, with hectic roads and language barriers.

It is crucial to know what to look for when assessing the vehicle safety, the driver and their driving.  So, some top tips:

  • WHO is driving – select trusted drivers, get local recommendations, ensure they are licensed and fit to drive
  • WHAT are they driving – is the vehicle appropriate and in good working order
  • WHEN they are driving – when did the driver last take a break…
  • WHERE are they driving – plan routes and avoid known hotspots, busier times of day where possible
  • HOW are they driving – don’t be afraid to say STOP and get out!
